Wednesday, October 2, 2019 – Our Guardians

Angel of God, my Guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here…

Many of you surely know this prayer. This has been a nightly bedtime prayer for my wife and I and our son for many years. As he’s grown and entered the pre-teen years, we’ve also included the St. Michael the Archangel Prayer for a little added strength.

But how amazing it is to think of all our angels in heaven that are always looking upon the face of our Heavenly Father. They are there, always, looking over us.

And believe me – we need it.

I know a number of times that my angels were there, watching over me, protecting me from harm. And there have been other times, where God has held them back, so I could learn something, so I could grow in some way.  And sometimes, both happened at the same time.

I think of all the angels in Heaven that are looking out for each of us. It’s awe inspiring. It’s humbling. Angel of God – it seems like a child’s prayer. But in fact, as Jesus says, “unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the Kingdom of heaven.

Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven.”

And so we need to turn to our Angels, our protectors, as a child would his own protectors. We need to look upon our Faith, our God, with the same awe and humility.

We need to look to and we need to believe inour Guardians. For they are always looking upon the Face of God. Who is always looking upon us.

Even when we don’t know it. Even when we don’t understand it.

It’s refreshing and comforting to know that God looks over us in this way.

There are times when we do things that we do not understand. There are times when things happen that we do not understand. There are times when people love us, yet they don’t understand us. They don’t understand why we do the things we do. And we don’t understand why it is others do the things they do.

But our Guardians do. They see through us into our soul. They see us as God sees us, and they know what makes us tick. They know where to steer us. And they know when to let us fail, sometimes to our demise. Because they are forever looking upon the face of God. They know His plan. They are a part of it.

It’s comforting to know that they are there. The He is there. Working through them. Our angels of God. Our guardians. Let us appreciate them and look to their guidance.

  1. May your Angels continue to guide you, and most importantly, may YOU continue to not only hear, but listen to their whispers…

    God Bless

  2. May we continue to be sensitive to the promptings of our guardian angels as they intercede for us in God’s presence

  3. Its comforting to know the guardian angels are looking after us knowing what they see God sees. This is Gods hand reaching out to us. Thats all we have to understand. Very nice Joe!

  4. God’s way is my way ,God’s shield is round me, God’s hosts defend me saving from ill, Angel’s of heaven drive from me always all that would harm me, Stand by me still.

Verse three from the hymn ‘This day God gives me’

  5. My mother always told her memory of driving with me on a country road when I was a toddler. She heard someone scream “Stop! ” so intensely that she slammed on the brakes. With that an incoming car (that she couldn’t see due to the tall cornfield) ran the stop sign.
I’m sure our guardian angels have unknowingly saved us many times but this was one of those obvious moments that could only be explained by the intesession of God. Thank you Guardian angels. Thank you Joe for the beautiful commentary.

  6. I have no doubt that guardian angels are real. I was sitting in church for my Holy Hour in adoration with my 4-year-old daughter. It is a very small community church and that particular day, the secretary was away and the door to the rectory was locked. My daughter kept telling me she had to use the bathroom. The church is in a neighborhood and the closest bathroom was the Casey’s 2 blocks away. I was afraid to leave since I was the only one around. I know there is a way to cover the Blessed Sacrament and stow Him properly but anxiety kicked in and I wasn’t sure how and I froze. I tried texting my husband for our priest’s cell number but he didn’t answer as he was working. As my daughters cries got more desperate I looked up at Him in the Monstrance and in a panic said, “Help.” Maybe 5 seconds later a man came in the vestibule, entered the sanctuary and looked around like he was looking for someone. I walked up to him and asked if he was looking for Father. He said, “No, I’m looking for a bathroom.” I told him, that’s funny, my daughter needs one at the moment too. I asked if he knew of one nearby. He said, “I’m not from around here.” Then in desparation I asked him if he would please wait while I took my daughter to the Casey’s. He said he would and when I got back I thanked him profusely, introduced myself and shook his hand. He smiled, did not reply who he was, and walked out the same way he came in.

  7. Last year I got into a motorcycle accident with a truck pulling a horse trailer in Colorado. I recall being panicked when I realized that I was not going to make the corner and would likely hit the trailer or the truck. But as I neared the vehicle I felt a sense that everything was going to be OK and relaxed just before impact. I hit the trailer at the front corner then bounced off its tires across the road. My friend behind me stopped just before hitting me. While the bike had a bent frame, I just had a scrapped elbow. I should have been killed or more severely injured, and everyone (including the police officer) told me I was very, very lucky. I don’t believe it was luck. I felt guided. Guardian Angel? I tend to think so.

  8. I know, those are moving stories and yes I believe in angels but what about innocent children who have terrible accidents or worse.

  9. To Anonymous above – As Joe LaCombe stated in his reflection, “There are times when we do things that we do not understand. There are times when things happen that we do not understand.”

While faith very fascinating, and many of us struggle to believe in some aspects of it, I would suggest that you increase your faith. St. Augustine said, “Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe.”

St. Augustine also said, “I believe in order to understand”. Centuries later, St. Anselm echoed statement by saying, “I do not seek to understand in order that I may believe, but I believe in order to understand.”

The road to understanding will become easier when you start to believe and have more faith.

    God bless.

  10. “The doctrine that every individual soul has a guardian angel has never been defined by the Church and so is not an article of faith, but is the mind of the Church “.

  11. To anonymous above, it’s an unfathomable evil that anything should happen to innocent children. Perhaps going to Relevantradio. Com can shed some light on your question. Yesterday many of their programs dealt with angels. There was one in particular that questioned “if we all have guardian angels why do bad things still happen? “. Part of the answer was “we do not believe in a God who is indifferent to evil, but one who suffered as we do to free us from our slavery to sin”. You can read or hear the rest at their website. Hope this is helpful.
