So they picked up stones to throw at him;
but Jesus hid and went out of the temple area.

This is such a human reaction ! well in the virtual world it is synonymous to cancel culture or #boycott trends… as humans we are social and want to always get along with the crowd and its opinions as we beg to differ .. so when once in a while , when someone questions our beliefs it leads us to react and usually with anger comes an amount of violence whether abusive language or throwing stones!

As a cradle catholic, I never knew much in depth about other religions, although living in India it is very unusual not to have a hindu or muslim neighbor or classmate or friend! While I followed my faith with my family traditions of attending sunday mass, regular confessions and praying to mother Mary through the community and family rosary. When someone around me who was catholic and didnt follow the set of rules, I would be astonished how do they even live with themselves!

Recently a close friend, self proclaimed atheist, questioned me on my faith! While I was accused of being indoctrinated into this religion after decades and centuries of Portuguese rulers conquering our land and forcibly converting the local Hindu families into Catholicism compounded by the travels of St Thomas to southern India as a missionary. I did agree that I was. I didnt pick my religion or my family BUT I do chose everyday to sit and believe that Lord Jesus is the Son of God who was born on earth and sent to die on a cross to save my sins! I chose to believe that when I shut my eyes and say a prayer , during the transubstantiation at Mass, I am receiving the Body and Blood of the Lord and the power of absolution of my sins by the priest through the act of confession!!

Todays reading of the reaction of people to Jesus proclaiming He is son of God reminded me of all the non believers I know who constantly remind me and tell me how naive I am to have faith, how the catholic church is full of abuse and scandal and dead children or the fact that there is no physical evidence of the life of Christ! It sometimes makes me question my faith and then I say a small prayer and this lent pray for all the non believers to have a little faith and stop judging and stoning everyone who does !

Today as we are nearing the final week of Lent, let us just reflect and see if the faith is strong to face those stone throwing non believers ! if it is not, ask for prayer and strength and if it is , pray for me !

PRAYER:

I stand before you Lord, sinful and doubtful, lost and confused. I ask for your guidance and help to decide what is good and focus on living your way of life everyday in my thoughts, words and deeds even when I find it hard and impossible!

AMEN

  1. Unfortunately, this sort of stone-throwing behavior goes on on all levels of life and humanity. I was happy for your writing and expression of your personal experience as it relates to your faith. Your experience will encourage me when I feel lost and confused with this sort of thing. I am not alone. Thanks!

  2. Thank you for your article Dr. Mello. I can relate to your roots of the tradition I was born into.. As Lent is a time of renewal, indeed, these scriptures serve as a blueprint guiding me into how some unpleasant encounters serve as an ability to overcome uninviting obstacles. How true are His Words, Follow me, as we are all made into His image – a calm spirit that leaves the other party quiet as His Words…stillness
of passion and ability to Inspire.

  3. Good reflection, Analise! The one big standout in the Christian faith is that Jesus alone went through Resurrection. No core figure of the other religions had it. To convince any atheists we encounter in our life, it would suffice, provided they have the patience to listen, to provide evidence for Christ’s Resurrection. One of the best historical events concerning this is the testimonial of Harvard Law Professor Simon Greenleaf, who started out as a sworn atheist but ended up as one who defended strongly against anyone doubting the Resurrection.

  4. Faith and grace are needed to stand firm, as ‘stones’ continues to be hurled at believers.

    Thank you Annalise.

  5. Although my parents had me baptised Catholic and sent to a Catholic convent school, my father never went to Mass, and my mother was not any religion. I thank the nuns, for giving me the faith, by their patient, kind teaching and good example. Later I taught catechism to confirmation groups, and learned more. But lately, I have been watching EWTN Journey Home programs, and they have greatly deepened my faith and understanding. I would recommend them to anyone.

  6. Thank you Analise. The stone throwers have always been there through the ages. Jesus, his cross and the Holy Spirit still remain strong…2000+ years strong. Keep the faith and look out for the stone throwers…they seem to be around every corner ready to take aim. Blessings my sister.

  7. Analise,
If you get Relevant Radio (Catholic radio) the Cale Clarke show just did a segment on the historical writings of people (not necessarily believers) who are a witness to Jesus life. Thank you for standing up for the faith and for your writings.

  8. Thank you Analise! I love the human way you share and standing up for our faith. I had to chuckle a little about Jesus hiding so as not to be stoned because right now our twin boy and girl grandchildren are participating in a Senior (high school) tag game. They squirt each other with squirt guns. Teams of 4 and last team wins a pot of money. The chuckle was I related to Jesus hiding and asked Him to help Olivia and Wyatt hide….I love that we can take any prayer or question or request or concern to Jesus no matter how trivial because He understands and is our Friend. 🙏🙌
God bless us all. I certainly will pray for you Analise. May peace be in Ukraine and Russia. 🚀🚀❤❤

  9. Analise,
Jesus is the only religious figure in human history to ever be pre-announced before he was ever born (Life of Christ, Fulton Sheen). The fact that Christianity survives today despite multiple attempts to snuff it out (and Judaism for that matter) by major world leaders throughout the ages testifies to its bedrock truth. It is also the only religion that claims God reaching down to man, not man reaching upward to God. Catholicism is the only Christian religion that has looked the same down through the ages (not founded by a man, but by Christ himself) without any changes to its foundations or errors in its dogmas (no dogma has, or ever will be reversed). The historical documentations of the Bible are incomparable and more numerous than any other ancient document in history (there are thousands of ancient scrolls that match, coming from all over the world, and still more are being discovered). Ancient artifacts of archeology being discovered further testify to the evidence of Jesus and his early followers, not to mention the Shroud of Turin, the most researched piece of history in the world. Faith and reason complement each other, not contradict each other. You need faith to believe in God, but you need more faith to be an atheist (G.K. Chesterton). Hope that helps with your atheistic friend!

  10. Love this reflection! I too was raised in a devout Catholic family. I’ve been blessed with Faith and the joy of my beliefs in our Lord Jesus Christ. The stone throwers are everywhere and will continue throughout all ages, I pray that we can continue to see the evil forces of the Devil! 🙏🏼 for graces of protection for humanity!

  11. As a cradle Catholic myself, I can identify with your experiences Analise.I have often been stuck for words when attempting to explain my faith in God and my reasons for doing so to non believers.
I am reminded of the words of the disciple Simon Peter, when he asked Jesus “To whom shall we go?”
Not sure if an atheist has the answer to that question.

  12. The very fact that you wrote this reflection and cared to share your private and intimate feelings is proof enough for me of the Holy Spirt’s workings. I cannot imagine any financial, social or other motivation that you might have to take time to write this other than your faith. The Lord’s ways are not our ways. We all have a part to plan in God’s kingdom — even the stone throwing atheist. He/she exists to strengthen us. So God bless you for writing this and for all the other readers who take time to read your writings and reflect/act on the Lord’s way.

  13. I love your short prayers at the end of your reflection. I have written them down and prayer them often. I feel as they hit on exactly what I am feeling at that time and need to prayer for. Thanks I enjoy reading your reflections.
