he then said to the paralytic,
“Rise, pick up your stretcher, and go home.”
He rose and went home.
Not exactly the words we use when we treat or talk to patients but the sentiment is the same. As a child , my memories of a doctor was an old bald cheery man who seemed to want to inject my buttock every time I visited his clinic. The clinic was pristine and smelt of antiseptic ! While his stethoscope was cold to my skin, I always was fascinated by the amount of stationery he had piled up. My mother tricked me into believing that doctors never fall ill and part of the reason I wanted to be a doctor more. I knew I wanted to be surgeon as a child and after many many years of studying, coaching classes, numerous exams I finally joined the obstetrics and gynaecolgy department!
6years of residency of 1000 deliveries and surgeries ( I stopped count after first 3 months) and 2 years of teaching students and training further in the finer aspects of the subject I do want to learn more as I began to fall in love with the physiology of the female body and the bonus — babies!!!!!!
The fact that I could like Jesus say “take your baby and go home.. you are fit for discharge !” is another perk of my job. Jesus set the precedent of saving lives and healing humans even on Sabbath nothing new to those who work through weekend and holidays. Today in a pandemic, when everyone is stuck at work in a PPE and health scares, we all try to do our job with utmost diligence. In a department like mine, where there is always happiness of a new life, this time it has been surrounded by stress and a few more deaths, almost all my doctor friends have been rethinking about the choice of our profession with the unending studies and the stress of infection looming!!
As my country celebrates Dr B C Roys day as a national doctors day, please keep all the doctors 500+ who have lost their lives due to the pandemic and all those who are studying and working at present. I hope they are guided into the profession more out of respect for human life and rather than monetary gain and fame. Let us as humans take Abraham as an example to follow Christ with no questions asked and do as He commands us – at work, at home and in our prayers! It is indeed hard and is the cross we all have to bear for the path to heaven.
PRAYER:
Dear Lord I thank you for giving me the chance to bring life on this earth. I thank you for guiding me with angels and helping me make decisions at time of need. Bless all the medical professionals even the non medical staff that work day in and out at all the hospitals with good health and stronger faith.
( Today say a prayer for the doctor who treats you, my readers- for their good health and safety)
AMEN.
