this generation will be charged with their blood!
Woe to you, scholars of the law!
You have taken away the key of knowledge.
You yourselves did not enter and you stopped those trying to enter.”

I happened to experience this at my medical college – where the learned professors didnt impart their knowledge but took it away from all of us who wanted to learn. The latest methods were not learnt by them and neither did they let any one else learn! I was very suprised to find teachers so harsh and rigid to any questions and learning and I made a note to myself to teach my juniors and students all I can with all the effort and boy I did!!

Teaching is a vocation. Everyone who is learned or has knowledge cannot impart it. As a catholic, I have heard so many learned priests over the years give homilies, some stayed with me some I slept through. I have seen people flock to a certain preacher cause ” he apparently explains the Bible well” but there are some who use this gift to increase their following and search for materialistic power!

I believe teaching is a passion, I absolutely love it and would assist so many of my juniors their rightfully earned cases in theatre so I knew they did not harm my patients! I always believed a teacher did minimal intervention, let the student be and learn and encouraged them to learn more! Today when we read the scripture we all turn into teachers through how we understand it and imbibe it!

While I know todays Gospel Jesus spoke of all the false pretenses put up by the prophets, I realise I do it too! I rather attend the prayer services regularly than help someone in need. Where as Jesus expects us to give our lives for His word and spread it.

Help us to be non judgmental and understanding towards the other and focus on being better humans than church heroes! I dont think Jesus keeps a tab of the masses I skipped while I ran to save a baby with hand out of the mothers womb! It is always the intent and the act that matters!

Let us focus more on practicing than preaching and being better humans to others than claiming the first bench at church!

PRAYER:

Help me lord to focus on acting all you say and living a life of faith. Help me to stop wondering about how I follow rules but instead be a better person everyday.

AMEN.

  1. Hi Analise. I always get something out of your posts. Today a reminder not to think I know answers, but to encourage others to teach me too.

  2. What a witness you are! I’m a retired teacher and Im still passionate about teaching children! Im very fortunate to work as a parish secretary and also in charge of the small book store and have many opportunities to evangelize! God bless you for your love for God’s children!

  3. “being better humans than church heroes” This phrase is about practical faith. Doing what one preaches.
Thank you Annelise for your contribution to strengthening the faith. God bless.

  4. Thank you Analise for that thought-provoking reflection. Putting faith into action with compassion and love is what all the saints did/do. God be with you in your God-given gift of teaching those medical students!

  5. Thank you Analise. To teach is a gift from God. Sharing knowledge and experience is precious time spent for the benefit and future of others. Thank you for your gift and service to us here at the Catholic Moment. We are blessed to have such loving directions in the name of Christ Jesus. Peace my sister.

  6. Nice thought provoking reflection. Do not beat yourself up about attending prayer services. There is a happy medium between your acts of faith and your acts of service. Without one you cannot perform the other. The time spent with the Lord in the prayer service gives you the motivation and grace to do a good job at the service part. Similarly if you only did the service part you would soon find it a “chore” and your contribution would slack off. Recall the Martha/Mary episode …
That’s my 2c worth. Nevertheless you inspire me and are a fantastic physician, writer and person. God Bless.

  7. Another powerful reflection that brings us to think how good deeds, not just words, are the most important. Thank you, Analise! Blessings!
