September 16, 2020 – To Love

In reflecting about the scriptures for today, it is difficult to come up with content, because, well, how can you top the first reading from St. Paul?  It is a blueprint for what it means to be Christian, spelled out plain as can be. Love for others should be behind everything that we do. Because, if you don’t have love – you have nothing.

This is the reason the first reading is read at so many weddings. It clearly explains our purpose not only as married couples, not only as Christians, but as humans.

There is nothing more I can add to this reading, no additional insights, no additional real-world examples. I think we all can agree that – love – needs to be the fuel behind many more actions in this world.

And so, I’m shifting gears.

6 years ago, after I finished the St. Therese Novena – during which I prayed for an opportunity to do something, something that would make a difference, and provide a sense of purpose – the opportunity to write for this website was presented to me.

It was something that was definitely out of my comfort zone, but something that I felt called to do. And so, I took the leap.

The last 6 years have been a time of ups and downs, and extreme mental and spiritual growth, much of which I have shared with all of you while reflecting on the Word of God for this website. And it’s through this writing where I have grown the most as a person.

I hope that all of you got something from my reflections, because it truly was done out of love, a love for Christ, a love for our Faith, and a love for all of you and the amazing feedback you have always provided. Sometimes I was spot on, other times I was a little off. But what I have received from all of you has been priceless.

So, if you haven’t guessed by now, I will soon be moving on from writing for A Catholic Moment. I feel that the Spirit is calling me in another direction. Exactly what that is, I don’t know as of yet, but it is time – time for me to move on to that next thing.

This is a perfect time, really. There have been so many changes this year. Changes in this country, changes in my family, changes in careers for my wife and I, just lots of changes.

Change is good. Disruption is good. Getting out of your comfort zone is good. Opportunities are good. Opportunities to move on to, leaving opportunities to fill.

299 reflections. That is what today marks. I will end next week with number 300. I love this website and all of its readers. I really do. And I am so thankful for the gift of writing for all of you over this last 6 years. You have blessed me with many kind words, but you have also challenged me, challenged me to become better. And I hope that I have been able to do that for you – challenge you to become better.

I will sign-off for good after next week, but I leave you this week with one simple challenge.

To Love. Let love be behind your actions. Especially in this climate in the world today – let faith hope and love drive you. But let the greatest of these be love.

Today’s first reading also reminds us to grow, mature and do things in a more mature way. So, sad as it is to experience this movement we need to let go and wish you well in the new direction you accept to take in serving the Lord. We will miss you and wish you well.

  44. Joe,
I’ll sorely miss you. Thank you for 299. Looking forward to 300.
I wrote you a lengthy note but I guess the thread manager deemed in inappropriate.
It’s sad to be censored in such a manner especially since I’ve been part of CM for going on 5 years.
If you would care to see my original farewell, please feel free to email me @ skipper333_us@yahoo.com
God bless you and you family and all your future indevours.
With love, your brother in Christ

  45. Thank you for all your thought provoking reflections. My prayers and best wishes go with you as you turn over a new leaf in your Book of Life.

  46. You’ve inspired me Joe. I’ll miss your reflections. Thanks and God bless you on your journey.

  47. We will sincerely miss you, Joe, your insights and the way you can bring the Word of God home to us. We will be praying for all of the blessings you’ll find on your new path. God bless you, your family, and all your changes. Thank you for all your words that have made a difference in so many lives.

  48. My brother Joe,
What are the old cliches “all good things come to an end” or ” where one door closes another will open”.
In any case, I will sorely miss you. I wish we could continue corresponding with each other.
I really feel you were speaking to me when you said “being challenged by us”. I do apologize if I railed on you to hard and really appreciated your responses when I did. You DID listen to us readers.
It has been an honor and a privilege to know you and to let us into your life. You’re one heck of a good guy. I miss Stevens reflections to.
I still have Mary, who has become like a second mother to me (my mother passed 4 -20 -2016). She (my mom) never gave up on her children and stayed on us about keeping and holding on to our Catholic faith. No telling how many novena’s she prayed for each of her 7 children. God rest her soul.
It’s not like the end of the world for us readers at CM. We still have our 2 Bob’s who are steady as a rock. Our new Dr. Analise who is developing into a good writer. John C. Is getting better all the time (as long as you don’t tick him off lol). And then there is Fr. Lawrence who blows me away with his scope of knowledge.
Having sung CM high praises I must say, I’m troubled how CM and its readers treated a former writer (not to mention any names) what he wrote did not go without merit (IMHO).
Shouted down and run off. Hummmm… Where have I heard that theme before???
May God Bless you abundantly Joe. Wishing you and family all the best in all your future endeavors.
    Love, your brother in Chist,
    Skip

I wish you and your family many blessings.

  50. Your reflections have always spoken to me best, so you will be missed! Best of luck and thank you for all you time and sharing with us.

  51. Joe, it hits me hard reading that next week will be your last Reflection with Catholic Moment. I always look forward to reading your reflections. If l can’t read it on Wednesday, l make time to read it another day as l am doing now. I have gained spiritual strength and inspiration reading your reflections. I will surely miss you. I wish you well and pray that God will continue to orchestrate your life and that of your family for the highest and deepest transformation as you seek another path of holiness.
