MONDAY OF THE 8TH WEEK OF ORDINARY TIME YEAR A MAY 29, 2023

MEMORIAL DAY IN USA, Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church

Grateful Hearts

We all do remember that expression “Freedom is not free.” Today in the United States of America, we celebrate a national holiday, called Memorial Day. So Memorial Day (Latin “memorare,”) is “Remember!” Day. To remember something is to allow it to be present in our minds and hearts such that we are grateful, sober, aware, and different.
The holiday is a special day, we remember the sacrifice and suffering of our brave men and women made for the sake of all.

As a nation, with grateful hearts, we owe these fallen heroes – and the families who mourn them – our gratitude for their sacrifice and our prayers for their eternal repose.

This weekend, millions of people across our country will visit a place most of us would rather avoid: the cemetery. As Christian, what can we do for these our sisters and brothers? In our understanding of the Communion of the Saints, we still have a relationship with those who have gone before us. Our faith teaches us to pray for our beloved dead. It’s something present, it’s praying for them, right now. We can do something for them in praying for the happy repose of their souls.

In the spirit of the day, we can also recall, honor, and pray for all those we know who have lived lives of service and sacrifice for the good of others.

For others, especially those who have lost a family member in one of our nation’s wars or other military actions and adventures, it’s a time of solemnity.

Jesus proclaimed, “It is consummated”, “consumatum est”. What is consummated? The reparation of the effects of the fall of Adam and Eve has been consummated. The ransom has been paid.

Today, also being the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, we honor and cherish our Blessed Mother for taking up the role of being the Mother of all Christian Faithful.

We are being advised by Jesus, in His last wish to accept the Blessed Virgin Mary us our mother. With Virgin Mary on our side, nothing can go wrong.
Have a wonderful Week.
For those who live in the continental USA, Happy Memorial Day

  2. Thank you Father. The Blessed Mary is an example for all of us in her unwavering commitment to listen to the Lord. I will say the Hail Mary today and forever in her honor and grace. Peace my brother.

  3. Thank you Father Peter. Blessed Mother: Thank you for saying “Yes” to our Lord’s invitation. Thank you to our fallen soldiers who fought for our freedom. God Bless the USA. I think of my grandfather and grand Uncles who liberated the concentration camps in Europe.

  4. Thank you Father Peter for another great reflection. Love your definition of “remember” above – to allow something to be present in our minds, to be aware, grateful, etc. and on this day when so many before us have paid the ultimate sacrifice, to pray for their souls and families.
