Today, in the first reading, Paul lamented about the evil living among the church community in Corinth. “It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife. And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have gone into mourning and have put out of your fellowship the man who has been doing this?”
Paul lamented that this kind of immoral and improper behaviors is a scandal and truly unbecoming of the Lord’s people. Such hypocrisy damage trust and weakens the community. He encourages them to stop such ungodly behaviors and turn back once again towards the righteous and virtuous path of the Lord. The corruptions of worldliness and immorality are stumbling blocks and obstacles in their path towards God and His salvation.
In our Gospel passage today, healed a man with paralyzed right hand in the presence of all gathered in the synagogue. Jesus words and actions are reminder that human life is precious and needs to be protected and loved. Each day is a day of favor. God’s work is to be done even on a Sabbath.
Today, the Church celebrates the Feast of St. Peter Claver, SJ. (1581–1654) a priest and missionary remembered for his great contributions in bringing many people closer to God. He was a courageous and fervent defender of the rights of the African slaves and others who have been marginalized, discriminated against and oppressed, standing by them and championing their rights.
Saint Peter Claver is known to have said “We must speak to them with our hands before we speak to them with our lips.”
The uniqueness of the call for discipleship is a blessing to the church. May we never forget that Jesus calls us to be the light of the world and the salt of the earth. God’s Good News and salvation is for everyone. Everyone is called to holiness.
Have a wonderful Week
