In the beginning, God created …

Stars in The Night SkyToday’s first reading from Genesis  pretty much begins at page one of the Bible. You can’t get much earlier in history than you do when you start with “In the beginning …”

Creation … what a thing of beauty! But it took place so many years ago, right? Why care now?

We will let the theologians and the doubters argue over exactly when the events of Genesis took place in recorded history. As for me … I think creation happened today.

And – God willing – it will happen again tomorrow.

“Let there be light.”

Indeed, let me open my eyes after a restful night of sleep to see the light of the first day of the rest of my life. Let me see the light as it brightens the day.

Ever stop to consider that first breath we take in the morning is a gift from God? It is by His will that we are given the gift of our first breath, our open eyes, our beating heart.

Creation: It happens every day.

“Let there be a dome.”

Indeed, let me step out of my home, walk to the curb to get my morning newspaper and look up in the sky … Can we count the stars? Do we ever try?

Our universe is so immense … created once, for sure, but always in motion. Created again and again.

Creation: It happens every day.

“Let … dry land appear.”

Indeed, let me enjoy the smell of fresh cut grass, the sight of flowers in the garden and the rows of corn in the countryside. They grow each day. They change each day.

The earth changes every day. One day is never like another. Always fresh and always new.

Creation: It happens every day.

You can read the rest in the Book of Genesis.

You might also take note of a favorite prayer that is part of the Liturgy of the Hours. It starts with the line “Morning has broken.”

Better yet, listen to the prayer in the form of a song …

And let us stop thinking that creation was a single event that took place thousands of years ago and only exists in the pages of the Old Testament.

Creation happens every day. Thank God for that. Your life depends on Him.
