Friday September 27th – I am with you says the Lord

And my spirit continues in your midst; DO NOT FEAR!

Two months ago, I went to Church on Saturday afternoon to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. My wife, Anna, had given me a grocery list and on my way home I was supposed to pick up a few items for supper that very night. Well what happened was something that I was not accustomed. There was a huge line for confessions. I had to defer my reception of confession until another day. I did do it. However, this was a new experience for me. When I went to church in Florida the lines were small. This is a trend throughout the United States and the world today. In Oklahoma every time I went there was a line.

Now I am not trying to say that we sin more in Oklahoma and they do not in Florida. What is interesting is that more people are receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation and participate more . Yes, you might say that people are busier in Florida. I don’t think so. Regular participation is a habit and should be considered as a good practice.

What I see is that the more people participate in the Sacraments are staying connected to the Holy Spirit. It is participation in every Sacrament.

In Haggai’s time from our first Old Testament reading the people were not connected or received the benefit of the Holy Spirit on a regular basis but still were still inspired enough by his words to receive God’s blessing. The destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem occurred in 587 BC. Babylon was not home. It was not Jerusalem.

Then comes Haggai in 520 BC. He tells the people to rebuild the Temple and something surprising happened to this prophet unlike other prophets of the Old Testament. They actually listened to him. Five years later the Temple was rebuilt for worship. And I will fill this house with glory, says the Lord of hosts.

The Holy Spirit was working and inspired everyone because Haggai’s words gave them hope. Greater will be the future glory of this house than the former, says the Lord of hosts; and in this place I will give you peace, says the Lord of hosts!

The hope was what Luke’s speak about in the Gospel which Haggai predicted as the future glory. That glory was Jesus Christ. His sacrifice was His death on the Cross and the eventual coming of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit’s help is the hope of today.

When we partake of the sacraments, keep the commandments and participate in the precepts of the Church we are building that Temple for today’s generation. God’s peace is our hope.

God Bless

  1. Hey Bob,

Why are the parishioners in line going to confession?

Easy answer, because of sin. A little bit deeper of an answer, because they believe in the sacrament of reconciliation.

And to believe in the sacraments must mean they believe in a higher power, namely God.

And if they believe in God and the sacraments, they must be Christians, specifically Catholic.

Today’s Gospel asks, in my opinion, one of the most important questions of our faith. Jesus subtlety asks the Apostles what the general public thinks about Him. It a fair question, considering all that has happened. And the answers that are given are reasonable. Then Jesus ask them specifically, ”But who do you say that I am?”

Substitute the people in line for the Apostles, specifically Peter.

Now you know why the are really in line.

  2. Oklahoma vs. Florida! These are troubling times in our Catholic Church. We are lost and confused. Our church is on murky water. Gods Commandments have mean swallowed by Catholic Church rules. As St. Vincent DePaul reflected; humility and charity trump rules. Reconciliation is confusing when people are living the difficulties of hatefulness , political beliefs being more important than love they neighbor … etc…and thus confusion with our church . Our church’s focus has been on personnel reconciliation but as yet the church has not give itself up to complete reconciliation with God our Father and his commandments. Feeling personnel, individual reconciliation with God is such a blessing. I hope we become more in tune with Oklahomans.

  3. The sacraments make us holier and not a condemnation to sinners. We are all sinners. The sacraments make us better Christians and therefore more open to the movement of the Spirit of God in us. It is not Florida verses Oklahoma. It is the state of grace and our connection to God. Reconciliation brings us to that state of grace. No part of the country has sinned greater or less than any other. We are all sinners but the point of Haggai is what do we do about it. We fall. We get up. Repent ! We move to the goal. The people of Haggai’s generation listened and so should our generation.

  4. I agree with much hope. After rereading my statement I see the negativity that it projected. That was not my intention. It was the sadness more so with the church, I feel and witness , and how it falls short of connecting us to Gods grace. My heart is frustrated with our local politically verbal priests. The step to make reconciliation to a priest instead of directly to God is my hope to understand again. To be more like Oklahomans was not meant as a cut but more a true desire to feel that grace connection . The beauty of my childhood weekly confession, walking home with an extra skip in my step and a joy in my soul is buried in frustration. Thank you for your response

  5. Confession does get us closer to God… In my state the lines grow longer in lent especially before good friday and before christmas for the bi annual reconciliation! It helps us feel better however maybe we do it more outa a habit than an act of contrition of our sins!?

  6. This is anonymous again…..I whole hardly wish to thank you for sharing the song “Holy is his name”. I listen to it every day now and the word feel me with much joy and hope.
