Friday, November 22nd, Saint Cecilia, Virgin and Marytr

Last week my wife and I attended a Church dinner party. We meet 4 times in the Fall and 4 times in the Spring at a different hosts couple. One of those meeting was a widow, so we do not eliminate the unmarried. We also invite priests as their schedules allow. The host couple sets the theme. It is an adult party with lighthearted witnesses of how the Gospel works in our lives. One of the couples told of how the husband converted to Catholicism. He watched and participated in the religious education of his children. That was his prophetic moment. The witness of his children.

Scripture is always sweet when we read it . The Psalm reading Psalm 27:14 Wait for the LORD, take courage; be stouthearted, wait for the LORD! The choir sang it and I loved it. The melody that went with it keeps ringing in my head. We wait and we wait, and say come on God …Now!

We say God you are too slow!

In other scripture God tells us to do things like being kind to immigrants, helping the poor and my list goes on. This is the sweet part. We listen to the scriptures and they are sweet to our ears but we ignore the practice. This is the sour part.

This is full disclosure. I did not write any of the books of the Bible. I must read the Bible and know when it uses metaphor or not. Nonetheless, Jesus never intended us to pluck out our eyes or sever a limb. We can’t ignore the poor and think we are good.

We still need to hang onto His words, and even though they instruct us to create a sour taste. We have to obey. He taught in the Temple every day. The chief priests and the scribes, with the support of the leading citizens, tried to do away with him, but they did not see how they could carry this out because the people as a whole hung on his words.

Wait for the LORD, take courage; be stouthearted, wait for the LORD!

God Love You Always

  1. It’s so good when we have a priest to explained the readings and gospel. Not so good when I try or listen to ‘off the street’ who might say any wild devilish thing.

  2. Thank you Bob. His words are sweet as honey from the comb. Lets hang on to those words even in times of sour. Peace with you my brother.

  3. Thank you Bob for reminding us of our duty to assist the poor. We live in a country where the latest example of ugly racism, misogyny and demonizing of any who don’t follow the line of division and intolerance are attacked. AND I am deeply saddened and angry that many Catholics who are descended from immigrants are following this myopic, mendacious utterly narcissistic thought. May God help us!
