Friday, March 11th in Lent

And if the virtuous man turns from the path of virtue to do evil, the same kind of aboninable things the the wicked man does, can he do this and still live?None of his virtuous deeds shall be remembered

My wife, Anna, will honestly tell you that I am a terrible golfer. I consider it a” hole in one” if I make par. One time on a Florida golf course I even killed a duck. The poor thing was just swimming in a pond and my stray ball beamed him and the poor thing died. The duck took a “deep 6” in an alligator infested pond. Some things should be left to the experts and those with talent.

Sometimes, my mind trys to tell me that I am a good person. This arrogance comes with being human. Over confidence is a common human failing. Truth be told. I was never as good as I thought I am. Yes, there are times when I think I have done what Jesus wants me to do, but let’s face it . I am still a sinner. Jesus says in today’s Gospel, “I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisee, you will not enter into the Kingdom of heaven.” He is saying we have to be better than the holiest person we know. On the surface that is impossible. This is not what Jesus is saying. He wants us to strive for excellence and consistency in our journey to the Kingdom of Heaven. Complacency and mediocrity have no place in a Christian’s life. We can’t be good one minute and turn around the next moment and sin.

You know the person at Church who seemingly is perfect and a super volunteer. They seem like they have the correct answer. These people should be emulated. Truth be told don’t compare them to you. This is about your relationship with Jesus. They are sinners too.

Still Ezekiel is giving hope to the Babylonian exiles and us. “If the wicked, turning from the wickedness he has commited, does what is right and just, he shall preserve his life.” A sinner can always change. Hope, however, comes with a price. Ezekiel 33:11 I swear I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live. God wants us to succeed. God loves us. He proved that by sending His Son, Jesus Christ. Genuine repentence is never easy. The only way for anyone to surpass the scribes and Pharisees is through God’s grace. Grace changes our hearts and it is free for the asking.

Jesus further says, Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar, and there recall that your brother has anything against you, leave your gift there at the altar, go first and be reconciled with you brother and then come and offer your gift. We can only attain this reconciliation with God’s help. We have to accept the fact that we have to take the first step.

On a personal note I have not grumbled so far this Lent. The thoughts have come through my head but quickly leave. Easter is a long way off. Grace!

God Love You Always

Bob Burford

  1. To Cecilia and Noreen,
Cecilia, the phone number you listed is for the diocese of Lafayette, Indiana. The two ladies I spoke with
said they had nothing to do with acatholic.org or the monthly calendar. Sorry it did not help but I
    appreciate the note.
Noreen, I was not able to find the calendar via the Saturday post. Could you see the March calendar today
via the archived post ? Thanks for your suggestion.

Can anyone else join the fray/quest to get the calendar updated to the current month ?

    Thanks in advance !

  2. I have never met anyone who actually killed a duck playing golf! Thank you for the smile. Thank you for remembering not only those with cancer but their caregivers also. God bless you.

  3. Robert Boelert,,,,
If you click on the “annual” calendar,,,,then you can use the small arrows in the upper left corner to scroll to the particular date readings you are seeking.

  4. Thank you Bob for your good work in bringing the Word to our homes and devices. May peace be with you and your loved ones. Praying for Ukraine and Putin to make peace their objective and for those who have cancer.

  5. Bob, thank you. I too have up complaining for lent. My sister caught me in doing so. I reframed my statement from “I had to go to that stupid meeting” to ” even though the time crunch will be challenging for me, I’m really appreciative that they want my input”. That has made all the difference in the world. I’m looking forward to changing my word into blessings this Lent.

  6. Thank you Bob! You made a good point not to compare ourselves to Saintly people that our relationship with Jesus is our own journey. Continue to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus as we strive to complete this journey to Heaven. I smiled about you trying not to grumble because it’s so human, keep up the good work😊

I continue to pray for Ukraine and peace in Putin’s heart. Please add Julia (a child) healing from a rare cancer and her caregivers. Thank you!

Robert Boehlart.. Dear Saint Anthony please come around…daily calendar scripture readings can’t be found. Hopefully it can be resolved soon.🙏🙌

God bless us all! Peace Love and Joy!

  7. Bob,

Thanks for your reflection. Good to hear that you are staying in your no grumbling zone and all the best on being able to continue to remain there for the rest of Lent (and who knows how far after that). I have been working on that myself.

Thanks to all who pray for those of us with cancer and please continue to pray for us.

A good weekend wish to all.

  8. Bob,
Thanks for the reflection and some keywords that I could use for a talk (rollo) that I am working on. De Colores!

    Holy Spirit,
Thank you for the guidance and inspiration.

    Robert Boehlart,
If you are just looking for a link to the daily readings, the “Today’s Reading for Mass” link, at the top of the page works just fine. After you link to that page, there is a scroll bar on the right which will give you the option for other days. Hope that helps.

  9. I keep trying to tell Robert about the daily readings and monthly calendar at the usccb website but my posts don’t go through. It may be because of the link. If this post works, he’ll need to search for it.

  10. Thank you Bob.
Does grumbling in you mind the same as grumbling out loud?
I really need to work on that.
