Friday, June 14, 2019 – We hold this treasure

My wife, Anna, and I recently had lunch at a Cracker Barrel restaurant. After our meal we were browsing in the gift shop and a tee shirt caught our eyes and tickled our funny bones it said ” When nothing seems to be going right…………… Go left.”

Saint Paul speaks of things not going right in our lives in 2 Corinthians 4 when he says ” We are afflicted in every way, but not constrained; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed;”

There are so many examples in my life and the lives of friends and relatives of things not going right. One buddy of mine was despondent over business losses and the loss of a girl friend who he loved deeply. At the time there was no hope in his life and for him there was no treasure. He was in such despair he even considered suicide. Thank God he did not because what happened next was that he found and married the real love of his life. He later commented that his wife was the woman God had intended for him. They had two sons who turned out to be fine young men.

Things are not always what they seem. Events, employment or relationship loss look hopeless at first. We are all guilty of taking the true treasures of life for granted.

The life of Jesus should be an example. Jesus suffered the death of a criminal, but proved His persecutors all wrong at His Resurrection. At first everything looked hopeless. This, as we know, was not the end of the story. Saint Paul goes on to say ,“always carrying about in the Body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our body.”

My sister, Patti, has a favorite quote from Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know well the plans I have in mind for you – oracle of the Lord – plans for your welfare and not for woe, so as to give you a future of hope.”

Hope and Faith are so intertwined in scripture and in our lives. The bread of life we consume in Holy Eucharist is our hope and mainstay.

I have to thank Chris who commented on last Friday’s post. She said,
“we are fed with the Bread of life and the Word of life”.The treasure, that we hold, is the Body and Blood of Christ in our lives. We hold Jesus in our hand and heart every time we receive.

It important to focus on that treasure and remember the words of Saint Paul, “Everything indeed is for you, so that the grace bestowed in abundance on more and more people may cause the thanksgiving to overflow for the glory of God.”

There is always hope because we have this treasure to sustain us. We are confident of the presence of Jesus in our lives.

God Bless

  1. Thank you Bob for the nice reflection. I too am retired after 35 years of being a High School teacher and later headmaster. I too am going through a tough time in my personal life living separately from my wife and son for the last 25 years. But I have also received tremendous blessings from the Lord during this period. God bless you, your work and your family. This is the first time I have logged on to acatholic.org.

  2. Thank you for the reflection. At certain point in our lives, we feel all hope is lost and so much abounded. But we always forget the God we serve. He is always with us. Even when we fall or when we are struck down, we are not destroyed. It’s never too late to get up and start again.

  3. Tks Bob for your reflection that the treasure that we hold in our lives is the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. This is very deep. Tks once again

  4. Amen! Jesus is the true treasure. We must faithfully live by his example and listen to him. He will guide us through the tough times.

  5. When we have Hope and Faith…we have the treasure. The treasure of the risen Christ. Thank you Bob

  6. I love happy endings Bob. Jeremiah 29:11 is one of my favourite scripture quotes. I first saw it quoted on a religious mug from which I drank my morning coffee. When my life was turned upside down, I would look at those words and ask God “WHAT ARE your plans for me?” I also framed a beautiful calendar picture with Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding. I hung the framed picture at the entrance hall of my apartment so that (I) and anyone who entered could not miss it. It hung there for many many years. I eventually put the mug and picture away – it seems, so far, there is no happy ending for me. I continue to read about the saints who suffered, my favourite being St. Theresa of Avila who was reputed to have a sense of humour. I read this story about her somewhere :

(…) while Teresa’s spirituality was a deeply reverential one, her humor also evinces a kind of playfulness in her relationship with God. Once, when she was travelling to one of her convents, St. Teresa of Ávila was knocked off her donkey and fell into the mud, injuring her leg. “Lord,” she said, “you couldn’t have picked a worse time for this to happen. Why would you let this happen?”

And the response in prayer that she heard was, “That is how I treat my friends.”

Teresa answered, “And that is why you have so few of them!”

Oh that I could have that much confidence to speak that way to Jesus!

Have a great weekend. God bless.
