Eckhart’s Ground | God’s Deep Love

We are all familiar with Jesus’ message on neighborly love – he calls us to love our neighbor as ourselves. However, it seems we get tripped up on actually loving our neighbors as Jesus calls us – at least I do. While it can be rather easy to love the neighbors who love us, we often find it difficult to love those neighbors who do not love us in return. You know, that difficult to love co-worker, the argumentative or estranged family member, the judgmental person in the pew, and/or those of other religious beliefs and philosophies. Being human we deal with human weaknesses every day, including an inability to love fully. However, we can grow in love and there is only one way to do this. By diving deep into God’s love. Such a journey takes us beyond ourselves and into a oneness with God.

Meister Eckhart

In an attempt to better understand God’s message of love I have been studying some of our church mystics. Currently I am studying the works of Meister Eckhart (1260 – 1328), a Dominican monk, preacher, and profound mystic of the Middle Ages. Meister Eckhart was a deep thinker and I am only beginning to scratch the surface of his thought. However, through my study one thing jumps out to me. Eckhart paints a pathway into God’s love that is beautiful and profound.

Eckhart speaks about the “ground”, a place where our soul goes to become one with God. Like many other theologians he also refers to this place as the “desert”. Here, in the ground, our souls unite with God – with Love. Eckhart’s ground is beyond our intellect, beyond our thoughts, and even beyond our virtues. We enter into the ground through silence. In the ground we are completely empty and ready to receive. In this emptiness God pours his great goodness into us. I can only imagine that this is the place the Baptist spoke of when he said he must decrease because Jesus Christ must increase. I think the Baptist was seeking what Eckhart calls the ground.

Eckhart’s Ground

I like to think of Eckhart’s ground as an infinite milieu that completely embraces and warms me. Floating in pure love, nothing disturbs my peace because I become peace. The ground is pure comfort, nurture, and bliss. In Eckhart’s ground we receive God’s outpouring of love. His loves consumes us so much that we cannot see where we end and God begins. God’s invitation into the ground is always open, yet, we must do our part and surrender to the pathway leading to it. The gateway into Eckhart’s ground is through continued deep contemplative prayer and silence. Our soul continually calls us to keep returning to the well of this sacred ground.

Entering the Ground

Our Catholic faith is rich with offerings of gateways into Eckhart’s ground. Contemplative Prayer, Lectio Divina, the Rosary, Stations of the Cross, Litanies, Novenas, and on the list goes. I even collected a series of meditations on my blog I call Fasting of the Mind that you may want to explore. The key is to pray so that our minds and hearts become empty and silent so God can enter in. I know this can be hard in our busy world with all its distractions and obligations. However, like all things, we must continually practice before we receive mastery. Setting aside time in our daily lives for deep prayer will help us love our neighbors as Jesus calls us to do.

Lent presents us with an opportunity to fall deeper into God through prayer. If you don’t already practice daily prayer I invite you to spend a few minutes every morning and/or evening with God in prayer. If you already spend daily time with God then I am sure you have experienced his beckoning call to a deeper union with him and his love.  As a community of believers our prayers are very powerful when offered together.

Our Prayer Community

A while back our little prayer community was born. I am humbled when I sit and read your posts and petitions. Sitting with them in the Adoration Chapel at my parish is one of my favorite forms of meditation. Your stories and petitions are beautiful. I experience special joy of heart when I read of your prayers for one another. I also love the updates! We are all united in our desire to receive God and his healing love. If you would like to add your prayer petition so that our prayer community can pray for you please add your petition below. If you would like to keep your petition private I invite you to email me and I will pray for you. You are also invited to list your name as anonymous.

Several weeks ago I asked you to pray for my son. He is doing better now, although his heart is still healing. Thank you for all your prayers. Now I ask you to pray for my oldest daughter, the mother of all my grandchildren. There has been significant heartache in my family – going back many generations. My daughter has suffered as a result. Please pray for full healing of broken hearts in my family.

I am also thinking we should give our prayer community a name. If you have an idea please share it below:-)

God bless all of you. See you next week Friday! – Carolyn

God the Father – draw us in your Fatherly love.

God the Son – continue to help our hearts heal and forgive.

God the Holy Spirit – embrace us in your divine love.

  1. Hi Carolyn! I want to thank you for being so open and generous with regards to building a prayer community.
Please pray for our family, good health and financial help.
We will also pray for your family.
    God Bless you!

  2. Thank you for your reflection. Please pray for God’s guidance and protection on my entire family. I also pray for my private intentions and also for abused children all over the world.

  3. Dear Carolyn,

Your reflections allow me a glimpse of this ground where God’s love consumes us so much “that we cannot see where we end and God begins”. This has touched me profoundly.

Will be praying for the healing of your daughter’s heartache. I do understand the feelings of pain and brokenness and will pray hard for her healing.

May I suggest a name for the prayer group? One With God or One With You.

  4. Thanks for the lovely reflection. I know to be really immersed in God we really need to enter into the ”ground”. Please pray for me that i may really enter into that gateway and silence with God, in the midst of this hectic world. Pray also for my husband and children that they may seek God and find Him. God bless

  5. I suggest we name this community : United in faith for better impact. Or United in faith for spiritual growth.

  6. Thanks Carolyn for this very wonderful reflection. Prayer is the only thing that keeps us closer to Our Maker. So we shall keep praying for you and your family while you will also do the same.
God bless you Carolyn and your family and may your daughter be able to get well quickly. Remember it is the trials and tribulations that we go through that strengthen our faith. I remember once my daughter and youngest son had kidney problems. I was even unable to pray and had to ask myself many question whether I had in anyway wrong God. But when I came back to myself and started praying I found peace and they were treated and today they are okey although the son is still attending his monthly review days.
So our faith in God is the one that keeps us moving despite the challenges that we meet in the way.
God bless you Carolyn for starting this prayer community where we are able to spill our hearts out to one another.

  7. That those searching for God and those who do not know what they are searching for will be guided by the Holy Spirit.

  8. Carolyn I will most certainly pray for your oldest daughter and your family; Carolyn will you ask the little prayer group to pray for Ireland. At the end of May there is a referendum. The Government wants to remove the Eighth Amendment that protects the unborn life and replace it by inserting a new clause saying “provision may be made by law for the regulation of termination of pregnancies”.
Please pray hard that the people of this land vote to keep the Eighth Amendment and that they remember that every life is precious. This week the Supreme Court delivered a landmark unanimous ruling that the unborn has no constitutional rights outside the right to life in the Eighth Amendment. We need the help of your little Army big time! Thanks

  9. I pray for the sick, poor and needy around the world, May God continue to provide for them and give them the strength to keep going. I pray for good health and divine favour for me, my friends and family. Finally I pray for God to guide me in my search for a good wife. Amen

  33. I look forward to Friday and reading your weekly reflections they always inspire me. Please pray for my friend who lost her 27 year old son to an overdose this week. This tragedy has been difficult to process! May Austin RIP

  34. Carolyn, I will be praying for peace and healing within your family. Paula, I will be praying for Ireland. My constant prayer is for an end to abortion. Please pray for my cousin’s son. His son is 6 months old. He was born with down syndrome and was recently diagnosed with leukemia. That part of my family is suffering greatly from other recent tragedies. Please pray for my marriage. My husband serves in the military. It is not easy on a marriage when he is gone. We have two young sons (3 year old and 7 mo). Please pray for me to be selfless in my marriage. Thank you wife and mother who’s husband is in the service. I don’t think any of us who haven’t been there can imagine the sacrifice your family is making. Thank you. May God hear the prayers of your faithful ones. Also, please pray for my cousin Rodney who’s wife suddenly died.

  36. “His loves consumes us so much that we cannot see where we end and God begins.” This passage spoke to me on many levels, but I feel like I experienced the above quote with my mother a week before she died. To this day I had not been able to describe to my family what that was, but now I know. I feel so blessed that I was able to feel that deepness with my mother and God, as if we were all one in that moment. I too love praying with this group, albeit, a day late this week, but pray I am doing this morning. God bless all your petitions, and thank you Carolyn for your wonderful message.

  37. God has been working in my life to lead me in ways that show me how deep his love is. I am blessed to have a wonderful heavenly and earthly family along with this prayer group. I am believing for normal kidney function numbers on my next blood test. I pray for peace and God’s loving hand to permeate us so we feel and receive his free grace and blessings, daily. Thank you all for your prayers and I have you in my prayer as well.
