Friday, December 14, 2018 – Hearing God in a Noisy World

Something is going to give, somehow, someway, things will be set straight and the world will be made new. Scripture is abundantly clear on this note. However, a look throughout the history of mankind makes one wonder how this will ever happen. While individually we yearn to love and be loved in return, on a whole mankind continually creates heartache and pain – the very things guaranteed to not give us love.

Today, as in Jesus’ days, while we desire love, too often we find ourselves seeking love in the world and not love on our Triune God. Seeking love in the world will not fill the human heart with true love. Our hearts cry out for God, they cry out for his true love. Nothing else will do. The human heart is created to love God and to receive his love in return.

Early Church Fathers and Mothers and Saints

So how can we experience God’s true love? How can we properly orientate ourselves towards God so that we can live a life of love? I believe that mastering anything, let alone something as important as mastering the ability to love, is accomplished by following someone who is already a master. As Catholics we have a rich history full of virtuous individuals who properly orientated themselves towards God – our early Church Fathers and Mothers and our Saints. Their orientation towards God lead them into real love, even amidst pain and tragedy. Studying their lives is an investment in love.

What did these individuals do that worked so well? Well, they had faith in the promises of Jesus Christ and they time spent significant time with our Trinitarian God. They read Sacred Scripture in a manner that drew them into a deeper love union with God. God invites us to do the same. Fortunately for us the Bible is readily available throughout most parts of the world today. A common practice that many (most) of our early Church Fathers, Mothers, and Saints followed is Lectio Divina. This form of “sitting” with Sacred Scripture will draw us closer to God – it’s one of my favorite forms of meditation. Lectio Divina is born out of Benedictine Spirituality. If you would like to read about Lectio Divina. I invite you to visit this page: Lectio Divina.

Flutes, Dirges, and Love

The flute and dirge Jesus speaks of in today’s Gospel offers beautiful symbolism. Flute music symbolizes the love that Jesus, John and the disciples had for all people. Have you listened to flute music recently? It does sound like love to me. Yet, most of the people didn’t hear the divine flute melody that was being “played” right in front of them. Without ears to hear the melody they could not dance the dance of love. This melody of love was in plain sight for all to see. It played when love was shared with the less acceptable people of society – tax collectors, prostitutes and others who were excluded or seen as less worthy of love.

A dirge, a song sung at funerals that accompanies mourning, can also be referred to as a lament predicting calamity. People all around Jesus were choosing sin and death over love and life. This grieved Jesus because, being fully God and fully man, he knew the spiritual consequences of this choice. The dirge was a cry to the people – “Choose love and life over sin and death.”  However, while many were choosing sin and the spiritual death that follows, many were also choosing love and true life. Jesus’ disciples, including John the Baptist, continually surrendered to love and life over sin and death. Through humility they died to themselves and allowed God’s love to reign in their hearts. Their great love for humanity called them to play a dirge to warn people of the impending calamity that follows sin and death.

Playing Our Flute

Let’s take this season of Advent to more fully surrender to the love of God. The season is full of hope as we look forward to the celebration of the birth of our Savior and anticipate his second coming. We can play our flute in Jesus Christ’s orchestra and let love reign. Our melody is especially beautiful when we love those who are excluded from society or those who are hard to love. God’s music is playing all around us and the sheet music is found in Sacred Scripture.

Global Light for Christ (GLFC)

If you are trying to love more I invite you to share your petition below. I for one am trying to grow in deeper love for others. Our community, GLFC, is a group of sojourners supporting one another through prayer and love.

I want to thank all of you who post here. When I sit with your petitions, often in the Adoration Chapel at my parish, my heart is deeply touched when I feel both your pain and the love we hold for each other. Even though we are separated by space and time we are together in the living waters of God. What a blessing we have in our community.

Another beautiful reflection Carolyn .It is so true about reaching out to those that are hard to love .My son that recently got out of prison has been arrested again .my heart yearns for him to turn his life around. I ask for prayers for him his name is Jacob. I am taking my friend Mike for a pet scan tomorrow as he has a mass in his chest He has had a difficult year with diabetes complications . Thank you all for the prayers and support

  2. Pray for my brother to see things through the eyes of Jesus. He has difficulties in forgiving and reconciliation…

  3. Hello. Please keep me in your prayers. I am not managing to find time to pray like I used to and everything else suffers as a result. I need Jesus in my life like I need air , yet I still distance my self and get distracted very easily by earthly things. I need to rekindle my relationship with Jesus.

  4. I can identify with the above petitions, for I too have a son who has lost his way, and I too struggle to sit quietly without distraction, to be with God. I pray for all who are struggling with heartache, or in any other way. Please remember my son D in your prayers, and me. Please Lord, hear our prayers.

  5. Please pray for my younger son’s girlfriend who is a non-christian, so that God may bless her and give her the grace to accept Jesus into her life as her LORD and SAVIOUR and lead her to Christian faith and live a holy Christian life.

  6. Hi Carolyn! Thanks for the above reflection. To my surprise everyone of us seems to be occupied with worldly things and forgetting our christian responsibilities in our lives. That of being prayerful every now and then. Let us not forget our Lord Jesus part in our lives that of saving us from the worldly sin and bringing us back to our Heavenly Father. Kindly my friends during this advent season let us look back and see how much of Jesus love we have lost and trend back to Him. God bless you Carolyn and have a happy holiday

  7. Thank you Carolyn. It all begins and ends with Love. Love rain on us as a people, and a nation. Let the flute of Love play on. Another beautiful reflection that opens my heart and mind. Cheers

  8. Last week I asked for prayer about my attitude, feelings, towards my sister who is mentally ill. Knowing you all were praying gave me such a sense of peace and to look at my sister in love like St. Teresa of Calcutta tells us to do. I love being in God’s family, thank you for your prayers. I will pray for you too.

  9. Please pray for my husband to accept and know the love of our Lord (and for me to be a godly wife). Pray also for my friend Amanda who has a progressive disease, is dealing with depression- especially during the holidays, and her beloved cat is dying of cancer… she doesn’t want much to do with God. Thank you for your prayers and may God accept all our prayers in His gracious mercy.

  10. This week we received confirmation that the PET scan of he spot on my husbands lung appears to be cancer . We have an appointment with the surgeon December 24. I ask prayers for us at this difficult time. He is diabetic with a weak heart and other issues as a result. Thank you and God bless.

  11. Dear God I ask you for your guidance, for my love for you to grow. For you to open the eyes of our heart so we can se you. Please watch over all of us always. Help Jonathan get a job- please help him with his depression help him find a reason to be alive. Bring him back to you please. Amen

  12. Thank you Carolyn for another wonderful reflection. I didn’t know that the flute is a symbol for the love of Jesus and his disciples. I have always found great peace when I hear a flute play! It is amazing how many of us share the same petitions. I pray for everyone who has posted here today. I ask for prayers for my friend James who is battling leukemia. May God give him strength, peace and hope as he goes through his treatments.

  13. During this Advent season I wanted so much to focus on Christ, to prepare for Christmas spiritually. As others noted above, this world continues to demand my time. My position at work is overwhelming and I’m very behind on things I owe my customers. Management wants to continue to demand more. I refuse to give up my mornings before work hours when I do my readings and find so much love and fellowship in these reflections. I also refuse to give up my weekend time to visit with my aging father, children and grandchildren. I’m in sales and have a call this afternoon with my manager regarding next year’s quotas. I heard from one of the managers that our top management is requiring a very unrealistic increase. Please pray that I handle this conversation with grace and professionalism. My prayers are with all of you for the intentions above and those in the hearts of all the readers. O come Emmanuel.

  14. I pray for all of you. Thank you Carolyn – and all the Catholic Moment writers for your loving and uplifting words and for your insights into the word of God. I have a son with mental health issues whose behavior has separated him from family – please add him to your prayers. A very dear friend of mine passed away last week from a terrible illness that lasted many years. Sometimes it’s so hard to understand the why’s in our lives . Albert Einstein said “The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious.” God and his ways are mysterious and there is pain in life but also great love and beauty.

  15. For anyone troubled by the stress, tumult and disorder of this world, I suggest praying the “Surrender Novena” from Fr. Dolindo Ruotolo.
O Jesus, I surrender myself to You, take care of everything

  16. Prayers for my sister Julie under going spinal surgery for a tumor on her spinal cord at this moment. Your reflection on today’s scripture very touching. Feel such peace. If we turn to God in all things! Like to encourage those with difficult situations with children to not loose hope. My prayer for my son was “you know Lord what it will take”. Things got pretty bad but the Lord took care of things in a way I could, not imagine. Today working going to school and engaged and living his faith. I found daily mass praying to st Monica and adoration helped!

  17. Dear Paul,
I awoke last night trying to remember the name of the novena prayer you mentioned — Thank you for reminder! The prayer brings instant peace.

As always, Carolyn, thank you for the peace you bring.

All others my heart felt prayers for each of you.

Please pray for my family to find faith together.

  18. Please pray for my daughter. Please pray for our home, for safe electricity, heat, and water so we can move back home. Please pray for our health.
    Adore Jesus!!!

  19. Please pray for my step-son and step-daughter. They refuse to accept my apologies for the many times I wrongly acted towards them as children and as recently as last Christmas Eve. I am truly sorry for all the pain I caused them, their spouses and my wife. My only hope and prayer is that they may forgive me one day.
