The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me because the Lord has anointed me; He has sent me to give glad tidings to the lowly to heal the broken hearted.
The legend of Saint Martin of Tours goes back to when he was a Roman Soldier in the calvary. He is purported to have met a beggar on the road who was shivering and cold. Saint Martin split his tunic in half and shared it with the beggar. That night Martin dreamed of Jesus speaking that Saint Martin had shared his tunic with Him. In the morning when Saint Martin awoke, he found that the very tunic was miraculously whole again.
Today as it turns out it is Saint Martin’s feast day, and it is also Armistice Day or Veterans Day in the United States. We honor the sacrifice made by the women and men who like Saint Martin served in the military. We also honor our military chaplains of all faiths.
How do all of us give glad tidings to the broken hearted?
Every morning I say my morning prayers and say a Rosary for peace in the Ukraine. It is always accompanied by a good amount of black coffee. My sister, Patti, says her prayers at night. Prayer is part of it.
We donate to veteran causes and our Knights group volunteer to visit our Veterans nursing home and help with flags. Treasure is part of it.
We at Church of Saint Mary’s have a home improvement ministry which has two big workdays where we help anyone that needs odd jobs done around the home. Treasure is part of it.
Answer!
We spread glad tidings by our time, talent and treasure. Simply said we give of ourselves. We can do it anywhere and anytime of the day. We don’t have to win the Powerball or spend our savings.
