Saturday September 29th, 2018 Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael

As I contemplated these mighty angels who serve the Lord God, I searched for their meaning in my life today. These super angels are creations of God just as I am. The question I have is, how do angels affect me here on earth and examples came to me right away.

Four years ago a friend, Mike, who worked in a nearby building and I were crossing a busy intersection. The sun was low in the sky and right in the eyes of oncoming traffic. It was early fall as it is today. The light turned green for us to walk across the intersection and my friend who was younger and faster than I was dashed into the inside lane. Well a huge truck who honestly was blinded by the sun sped through the red light. Luckily, for my friend the truck was in the outside lane closest to the center line. The truck missed my friend by inches. Were angels protecting him on that day?  I think so. As a result we became closer friends. That day is still vivid in my mind as it is his.

GUARDIAN ANGELS:

Psalm 91:11 “For he commands his angels with regard to you, to guard you wherever you go”.     I think my friend, Mike, believes in them and so do I.  We as Christians should concentrate on our relationship with Jesus. Nonetheless, Jesus has given us helps in our day-to-day life. As a child we were encouraged to say a prayer to our Guardian Angel. As an adult we concentrate on our adult relationship with Jesus but forget the Guardian Angel He has given us.

GENEROSITY TO STRANGERS:

Hebrews 13:2  “Do not neglect hospitality, for through it some have unknowingly entertained angels.”  Sometimes, perfect strangers come into all of our lives. My neighbor Bob would go to the Salvation Army every day and work in their food kitchen to prepare food for people he never knew.  After retiring my Uncle Guy would go the airport, as a translator assisting those needing help who had trouble understanding English.

JESUS IS LORD:

John 1:51 “And he said to him, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see the sky opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”  Someday, we too, will see this amazing sight ! We know in the New and Old Testament that there is a battle going on between good and evil. We also know that good and bad angels have played a part in Biblical outcomes.  Our Saints who are angels for today are some of the good guys. The Devil and his minions , not so much.

CONCLUSION:

Don’t forget your Guardian Angel! You can petition this Saint or that Saint but God has also assigned  powerful alleys to each of us. Use your guardian angel or any good angel.  Grow your team ! Change the world with prayer and the help from His messengers.

PRAYER:

Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me her. Ever this day be at my side to light and guard to rule and guide. Amen !

God Bless

Bob Burford

  1. I have not often thought about guardian angels recently however the more I think about it they are everywhere looking after my family and I. This blessing and gift of God should be returned by “entertaining” others through almsgiving and good works that return the love and care given to you. Thank you Bob for another beautiful relevant reflection. May God Bless

  2. Thank you for the reminder to remember to pray to our guardian angel. I go through periods of time where I remember to pray to them daily, then things get hectic and I forget. Also, remember to pray to St. Michael for protection.
Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the malice and snares of the devil. May God restrain him, we humbly pray, and do thou, oh prince of the heavenly host, with thy divine power cast into hell Satan and all of his evil spirits who roam this world seeking ruin of souls. Most sacred heart of Jesus have mercy on us. Amen.

  3. My confirmation name was “Frances”. Even though I picked the name after St. Francis (because he loved animals) my mom made me use the female version spelling… (it was the 60’s… what can I say?). Anyway, I feel my guardian angel has sent animals to guard me in honor of St Francis. 1) One late night driving home I began to doze off, I
remember doing that sleepy blink right before your eyes close when a skunk ran across the road. Woke up my whole being.
2). In my 20s I lived in a “safe” busy neighborhood. I never worried about walking somewhere at night. One night I saw a man walking o forward me who gave me the creeps. Normally I would have been brave and just walked past him. I decided not to be brave and made an obvious detour around him. As I was doing this, I noticed a big dog run out on the street. The dog stood there until I was safely past, then he returned to the other side. I lived in that place for 5 years and never saw the dog before. I saw the dog one time after that but never again.
Thank you God, St Francis, and my guardian angel!

  4. Thank you for including the guardian angel prayer! I used to say it with my kids all the time when they were little but have not prayed it in a long time! We are so blessed to have such an awesome team on our side such as these! My son is named Michael and I love the thought of his archangel guardian keeping him in his care!
