Today brings it all together. Holy Trinity Sunday. When I compare our faith with the other faiths in the world, this is what is brilliant and most true, about Christianity – God meets us where we are – everywhere. He’s dynamic. He is constant, but ever changing, in motion, there in every moment, activity and event.
He’s a force that stimulates change or progress in everything in this world, bringing better from good, and even better from bad. And He can only do this if He is the one who created us, and became one of us, and descended upon us in Spirit. God is everywhere – in the heavens beyond space and time, on the earth, in the midst of us in humanity, in the air we breathe and in our very heart and soul.
He’s there in the good. He’s there in the bad. He’s there when we laugh. He’s there when we cry. He’s ever changing, ever evolving, to meet us where we are, with every choice we make – good or bad. He’s infinite steps ahead of us, and through His Trinity, He brings it all together.
He’s dynamic. In every sense of the word.
This is what I wish all Catholics appreciated and understood in the world today. God is constantly moving, trying to pull us near Him.
If we look at the beautiful creation of this world by our Father, the natural beauty he created, the beauty of human beings from every continent and culture on this earth, the diversity, the uniqueness, yet the similarity. He is there. In every one of us. I simply think about the natural and humanly beauty in the various countries from which all of you are reading this article, all across the world, and it purely astonishes me.
As we speak, my wife is outside taking pictures of a bright full moon, and I’m watching her amazement at the beauty, and then I look up and see the miracle with my own eyes. Have you ever gazed at a full moon and simply contemplated that thought, even for a little bit? How does that happen? I know we know scientifically, but when you actually think about it and wonder – it just boggles my mind.
But that wasn’t enough. We needed more.
Through all His creation, through all the natural beauty, the creation of all the animals on this earth, and the creation of human beings – we faltered. When given the choice – we chose wrong.
And so 2000 years ago, God knew that to make amends, to make things right, He had to meet us where we were. He had to experience temptation and sin. He did not sin, but He experienced sin in His Passion. He felt and lived the sin of humanity from past, present, and future. He took that upon His shoulders, because we could not, and God the Son, took that burden upon Him for us. But in becoming one of us, a human, He forever is there, understanding us in a new way, meeting us where we are, forever being united to us in our humanity.
But that wasn’t enough. We needed more.
And God knew this. We needed His Spirit within us, through us, and around us. We needed His Sacraments, and when we receive one of them, we feel His Spirit within us. We feel His Spirit at work.
When we take part in a renewal retreat like Christ Renews His Parish, or when we consecrate ourselves to Mary through a parish program, or when we join a fraternity of men for a 90 day program of fasting and asceticism and prayer, His Spirit is there. When we lead a group of mom’s together to hear from other mom’s about how the Spirit is at work in their modern, crazy, messy, and beautiful lives – His Spirit is there.
And when we finish a Novena to Saint Therese – the Little Flower of Jesus, and you walk out one morning and find a nicely clipped rose on your sidewalk, and then 5 days later you are blessed to start writing for this website – His Spirit is there.
He is dynamic. He comes to us in so many ways, in so many forms, through so many people. Sitting by a pool, under a beautiful June sky, having a conversation with your best friend as your kids compete in a swim meet – a conversation that perhaps can be life changing. He is there – in the Heavens, in person, and in your soul.
This is our dynamic God – meeting us where we are. Look around.
And so I ask you – where is God meeting you today? Where you are? I don’t care what your lot in life is. I know some of us have it tougher than others. But we each only know what we know, and we only experience what we ourselves experience. And we only feel God in ways that only we, ourselves feel. Where is He in your life? What is He calling you to do? What Changes is He asking you to make? Through whom is He trying to speak to you?
Look around.
God is dynamic, He’s there, within us, and around us. Meeting us where we are. Where is He in your life today? I pray that you see Him at work.
