Choose to Serve

Today’s reading is a teaching we have heard a thousand times. It is the story of God asking us to serve. He calls us to be servants without hesitation or reservation. The call of the Lord can be so subtle. A whisper in a crowded room. Those who choose to listen reap the most amazing benefits. Just as Sarah bore a child in old age do we receive the most seemingly impossible, but wonderfully divine and satisfying benefits.

When I first moved to Indianapolis IN I was still at a period in my life where I was in college extension mode, trying to stay as young as possible for as long as possible. Part of my attempt to stay young involved my immature and unsupported reasoning for not going to church. During my first year and a half and a series of events both life changing and unfortunate I began to feel a pull back towards the church. Yet, against my better judgment continued in my ignorance.

About a year ago, I heard my whisper. It was like I was at a concert standing next to the giant speaker and I was lost. I was looking around, reaching out for something to hold onto but falling down, failing. This is when I saw a glimmer of hope, a motivation to stand up and walk towards reason and understanding.

Upon such an epiphany I was able to pick myself up and choose to listen to what God was asking of me. My whisper brought me to the Christ Renews His Parish ministry. Where I was able to learn about the community of faith that never excludes and always reminds of God’s love. I was able to arrive at God’s doorstep hand in hand with my sisters and invite others in behind me.

It doesn’t matter if you’re being called to a silent ministry such as adoration, or a group ministry such as Sacristy. The revelation is of God’s love and is that of eternal nature.

Choose to listen, choose to hear, choose to serve; and revel in God’s loving glory.

About the Author

Hello! My name is Laura Kazlas. As a child, I was raised in an atheist family, but came to believe in God when I was 12 years old. I was baptized because of the words that I read in the bible. I later became a Catholic because of the Mass. The first time my husband brought me to Mass, I thought it was the most holy, beautiful sense of worshiping God that I had ever experienced. I still do! My husband John and I have been married for 37 years. We have a son, a daughter, and two granddaughters. We are in the process of adopting a three year old little girl. We live in Salem, Oregon in the United States. I currently serve as the program coordinator for Catholic ministry at a local maximum security men's prison. I‘m also a supervisor for Mount Angel Seminary’s field education program, in Oregon.
